Sambar Recipe At Home

Sambar is a South Indian lentil & mix vegetable soup that is eaten along with breakfast or meal as a side dish. Sambar is a staple in South Indian shared homes and also equally popular and loved by many. The sambar recipe shared here is an easy method to make delicious vegetable sambar.

Sambar is the most integral part of south Indian cuisine. Be it any kind of idli, dosa, vada, or rice, sambar is considered to be the sure-shot accompaniment. South Indians tend to include a bowl of hot sambar regularly in their meal.

Sambar is one of the most popular traditional Indian dishes that are not only healthy & nutritious but also tastes delicious. It is said by elderly folks that sambar provides complete nutrition to our body as it is protein-packed & nutrient-dense.

It is mainly because of its mouthwatering taste but also because it provides a lot of health benefits as well. It is considered to be a protein-packed soup as it is made from Tuvar dal.

A good sambar powder always yields a good and tasty sambar. So when you make it, try to have a good aromatic sambar powder. You can also use your favorite brand of sambar powder.

Ingredients

     

For Sambar Recipe

  • 3/4 cup Toor dal
  • 1 tbsp turmeric
  • salt as per taste
  • 1/4 cup coriander leaves finely chopped

     

Vegetables For Sambar

  • 1 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 medium tomato finely chopped
  • 1 to 2 vegetable drumsticks
  • 1 green chili slit
  • 1 cup crushed bottle gourd

    

  Tadka For Sambar Recipe

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 1/2 tbsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1/2 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 red chili 
  • 2 tbsp coriander powder
  • 2 tbsp green chili garlic paste
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp readymade sambar masala powder


How To Make Sambar:


Step 1


Wash Toor dal a few times in cooker until the water runs clear. Drain all the water and add the dal in a pressure cooker. Also, add 1/4 tbsp turmeric powder and 1/2 tbsp salt and add 2 cups of water and mix.

Cover and pressure cook dal for 4 to 5 whistles or 10 to 12 minutes on medium flame.

Step 2


When the pressure settles down on its own, open the lid and check the dal. The dal should be completely cooked and mushy. Mash the dal with a spoon or wired whisk. Cover and keep aside. You can see the consistency of dal in the picture.

Step 3


Rinse all the veggies. Scrape the drumsticks lightly & rinse. Chop them to 2-inch pieces. Finely chop onions and tomatoes. Make chili and garlic paste. Wash bottle gourd and crush it. set those all veggies aside.

Step 4


Meanwhile, heat another pan with oil. Add mustard, cumin & methi.  When they begin to sizzle, add curry leaves, broken red chili. 

When the leaves turn crisp, off the heat add hing. You can also add 1/8 to 1/4 tbsp of sambar powder to the hot pan. 

Step 5


Now add chopped onion into the pan. saute it for 2 minutes. now add all the chopped veggies to the pan and saute it for 5 to 6 minutes. When the vegetables are completely cooked, add turmeric and & salt. Add red chili powder and coriander powder mixes it well.

Step 6


Add smooth dal, mix well and bring it to a boil. Now add lemon juice and sambar masala into dal. Stir well. Check if there is enough salt $ sourness. If needed add more. 

Step 7


Add coriander leaves. And serve sambar with rice, idli, vada or dosa.
